Importance of Backlinks

The Importance of Backlinks

A backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node (Bjorneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Backlinks are also called incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links. Backlinks are an indication of the popularity or importance of that website and are very important as some of the search engines, especially Google, gives more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.

While calculating the relevance of a site search engines consider the number of quality inbound links to that site. Here quality is what counts and not quantity. So we should not be satisfied with merely getting inbound links. When other site sends inbound links to your site then these are said to be quality links provided the con tent on the inbound relates to your site. For example: if your site deals with jewelry then inbound links from other jewelry sites will be considered and not the one from a tours and travel site.

There are two main reasons for search engines to emphasize on backlinks:

The first being search engines want to make search engine optimization a fair game. Manipulating links on a web page to achieve a higher ranking is easier but a lot harder is to influence a search engine with external backlinks from other websites.

Visitors are attracted to your site because of quality backlinks. Backlinks provide a way for visitors to navigate the website.

There are three ways to gain backlinks:

The Domain Stats Tool can be used to find and track backlinks. This tool displays the backlinks of a domain in Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

Another tool to help you with your link building campaign is the Backlink Builder Tool. This tool searches for websites that have a related theme to your website which are likely to add your link to their website. Another way to gain quality backlinks to your site, in addition to related site themes: anchor text.

If you want to have long term results backlinks are very important and should be on your high priority list. Understanding importance of backlinks and its application can make or mar your efforts to drive traffic to your website.
